From Gilda to Leslie Jones - Our Favorite SNL Ladies

Starting in 1975, Saturday Night Live has started the careers of some of our favorite funny women.

In honor of Women’s History Month, let’s look back on some the legendary women who graced NBC.   Here is a list of our top 8 favorite SNL ladies.

Gilda Radner

As one of the original seven cast members, Gilda paved the way for female comics on the show. With her recurring characters like Roseanne Raseannadanna, Baba Wawa, and the hearing impaired Emily Litella - she transformed herself in front of audiences every Saturday night. Gilda was a fearless, weird, and talented all of which was seen through every skit she wrote. Not to mention, she married Gene Wilder A.K.A. one of the all-time greatest celebrity couples.

Maya Rudolph

Not only does this woman have an unreal singing voice, but her impersonations are spot on. Maya has portrayed Beyonce, Donatella Versace, Whitney Houston, and more. She has become a break out star of the television program and has been seen on a variety of movies. One of our favorites, Bridesmaids, showed a hilarious, yet dramatic side of the actress. We will never forget her pooping in the middle of the street in a full wedding gown!

Amy Poehler

This talented blonde lass started comedy at The Second City before founding the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Amy became a cost member on the show in 2001 and audiences automatically fell in love with her. From Madonna to Dakota Fanning, she never ceases to make people smile. In 2004, she joined forces with her gal pal Tina Fey to become a co-anchor on Weekend Update. Who can forget the amazing “Bitches Get Stuff Done” speech? It’s the ultimate mic drop for women everywhere.

Kristen Wiig

Noted as being one of Lorne Michael’s favorite cast members, Kristen can transform herself in some of the weirdest characters we have ever seen on TV. Before leaving the show in 2012, Wiig created memorable characters that audiences expected to see week to week. She also has one of the best SNL send offs in the show’s history. During her final episode, Mick Jagger sang “Ruby Tuesday” as cast members slow danced with her. Yes, we completely cried.

Jane Curtin

Going back to the first season of Saturday Night Live, Jane Curtin was a refreshing breath of air. Known for being the “Queen of the Deadpan” she became the first female anchor on Weekend Update. Recently, she made an appearance at SNL’s 50th Celebration where she took to the Weekend Update desk with both Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. Personally, we loved her the most as the wife and mother in the Conehead sketches.  Flarndip!

Leslie Jones

After auditioning for a position in front of the camera on SNL, Jones was first offered a gig as a writer, and we are sooooo glad she joined the team.  We got first taste of this talented powerhouse in action and on set just 3 years ago during an appearance a Weekend Update segment.  Needless to say, she knocked it out of the park and  was asked to join the 40th season of the cast. She continues to make us roar with her obsession with Colin Jost and hilariously real monologues.

She just had me in tears on SNL. Glad I tuned in. Certified Black Girl Magic! ??

Tina Fey

There is no way you can have a list of top SNL female cast members without this woman. Not only is she a talented comedian, but is an amazing writer. Later in her SNL career, Tina became the head writer for the show and would also go on to become the co-anchor to Weekend Update. Tina has also graced us with Mean Girls, 30 Rock, Baby Mama, and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Oh and not to mention, her Sarah Palin impersonation is spot on!

Kate McKinnon

Best known for her character work and celebrity impressions, there is no one that Kate cannot become. Kate made her debut as a featured player in 2012 where she became the first openly gay cast member. She has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series multiple times. Kate eventually won in 2016 where she became the first actor from SNL to win the award in many years.
