Focus on the Delaware Valley 04/2/17 Help:MLP

Health, Education and Legal assistance Project: A Medical-Legal Partnership at Widener University which provides free civil legal services to people to improve their overall health and well-being  was discussed by guests Joanne Craig, Administrative Director at Crozier Keystone Community Foundation, Women and Children's Health Services; and Laura Handel, Managing Attorney, and Jordan Casey, Staff Attorney, at the Health, Education and and Legal Assistance Project at Widener Delaware School of Law.   'HELP:MLP' brings legal assistance to pregnant women and their families in landlord/tenant disputes,  benefit applications, immigration issues and more; all to relieve stress on her and her baby and to lower Chester's higher than average birth mortality rate.  Nurses providing healthcare services are trained to 'triage' and bring in the legal or other social service providers to help the family.   The guests also discussed the need for volunteers, attorneys willing to offer training and volunteers to work with the Healthy Start program, they also spoke about possible federal budget cuts that could affect the populations they serve.
