Epic Game Store announced a major sale, one that included Grand Theft Auto V for free until May 21st. As soon as the sale went live yesterday (5/14/20), all chaos broke loose.
The Epic Games Store servers were down for about a 12 hour span.
Presumably, the store crashed because of a leaked tweet announcing the game would be available for free at a certain time, which called for many many people refreshing their browsers at the same time.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. Epic Games said due to the crash, they were also experiencing several other issues on their iOS and Android platforms, as well as on PC and Mac, and even Fortnite.
After about 12 hours of dealing with the outage, Epic Games restored their servers and they are currently up and running with no issues. Epic is letting you claim the Premium Edition of GTA V, which includes “the complete GTA V story, Grand Theft Auto Online, and all existing gameplay upgrades and content.” Not to mention, you’ll recieve $1,000,000 in in-game bonus cash on GTA V Online.
But before you go downloading your copy, please be aware, you must have two-factor authentication turned on in order to download the free game, thanks to the server crash. If you need a guide on how to turn on two-factor authentication for your account, Epic has one you can follow here.
Epic Games went on to say that it plans to continue to give away free games through 2020.
