Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Real Men Wear Pink Download

Download September 22nd, 2019

Jason Plaia, Director of Community Development for the American Cancer Society, and Amy Scully, Volunteer and breast cancer survivor, discussed breast cancer and the services offered by the American Cancer Society.  Jason spoke about the research funded, including new, cutting edge programs that later lead to major studies;  we discussed the incidence of the disease – 268,000 women and another 2,700 men will be diagnosed this year, and the steps you can take to prevent the disease, including exercise, a healthy weight, avoiding alcohol and tobacco and a proper diet.  Amy discussed her own experience, she developed breast cancer despite a family history that was clear and a healthy lifestyle and she reminded us that 70% of those diagnosed have no prior history in their family.  They talked about direct services offered by the American Cancer Society, including a 24/7 hotline, referrals, transportation and lodging for treatment and even wigs and group support.   Because these, and the research, take major dollars they discussed their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k walk/run, Saturday, October 12th at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park on the Wilmington Riverfront.  Presented by Delaware Imaging Network, the event opens with registration at 7:30. There will be information, entertainment, survivors’ recognition and fun for everyone.  It is free to participate but fundraising is the goal, on a team or as an individual.  Throughout the month real men can step up in fundraising for the Making Strides grand total by joining the real Men Wear Pink campaign: sign up, wear pink in October and fundraise at least $2,400!  Beyond earning the bragging rights, every participant is helping raise dollars towards breast cancer prevention, detection, research and treatment.  Men can sign up through the end of the month.

For more information visit CANCER.ORG.   To register, donate or join a team October 12th, visit MAKINGSTRIDESWALK.ORG/WILMINGTONDE or call 800-227-2345, their national Hotline.
